This weeks events! (Taskerade, Winter biking wksp, bike repurposart)

Hope you’re enjoying these first few days of snow. Hold on to your hats, and put your pied to the pedals, because just because it’s snowing doesn’t mean things are going to slow down around here.
So this week is actually pretty active at the flat. We have plans, we have workshops, we’ll have pizza and we’ll have fun. Everyone’s welcome!
Tomorrow (19th – Wednesday) we’ll have Taskerade! That’s when we all (ALL you hear) come together to the flat and clean up the place and get things organised. We’ll have some food and good music, so please drop by at or after 5 pm to help us out. Yay to getting things done!
On Friday (21st) 5-6 pm, we’ll have a winter biking workshop. It’ll be a very basic explanation of what’s helpful when biking when even cars are afraid to venture out. If you have things to ask or to say about pedaling when the snow is pedal high, please drop by. Space will be limited to 15, first come style.
On friday again, 6 to 7:30, we’ll have a bike art fiesta. This will be a very casual discussion and planning about repurposing some old bike pieces into objects of art. If you have any ideas, experience, interest or some true inner calling, you’re wanted.
Again, everyone’s welcome. talk to us if you have any specific questions. hope to see you there!

NOVEMBER AT THE FLAT!

October is gone. And with it are the last of the leaves that fell on you and your bike while you were biking along the tree lined streets of beautiful Montréal. The crowds are dwindling on the bike paths but not here at the flat. Here we ride strong. Here we ride all year long. (Well, some of us) Things are still pretty hoppin’ in the shop.

Events this month start with a wheel workshop Wednesday Nov 5th.  Wheel working Wednesday wheel call it. (haha, sorry had to)  Come learn about all of the parts of the wheel and how everything works together to get you rolling.  Bring your own wheel or use one of the many fixer-upper wheels we have kickin’ around the shop. The workshop will start at 5pm, and run till 7:30.

Next up is WT*Q night Wednesday November 12 (5-7:30pm).  We welcome everyone identifying as female, trans*, and/or queer for a night of bike fixing and good jams, in a supportive + positive environment. Come wrench on bikes with like-minded people, leave with community and a smooth ride.

Rumor around town is… WINTER IS COMING.  On account of this yearly phenomenon we’ve decided to have a workshop with all kinds of tips on making thru Montréal winters on your bike. Come one, come all! Learn and share your tips on winter biking Friday November 21 5-6pm.

That’s all for now. Happy riding everyone, and hope to see you around the shop!

PS. We’re still looking for volunteers.  If you want to get involved send us an email and we’ll hook you up. This winter we’ll be building up the bikes in the basement! Come and join us. All skill levels welcome! It’s a great way to learn about bikes!

WT*Q Night tonight!

We wish it weren’t true, but there are environments where women, trans* or queer people don’t feel welcome. Bike shops can be one of them! We open specially on the 2nd Wednesday of every month for a WT*Q night as an attempt to help address this.

We welcome everyone identifying as female, trans*, and/or queer for a night of bike fixing and good jams, in a supportive + positive environment. Come wrench on bikes with like-minded people, leave with community and a smooth ride.

Change in hours
We’re back to evening hours! Yay!  That makes our regular opening times 5-7:30pm monday, tuesday and thursday nights. We’re still short on volunteers so there may be the possibility of some shop closures, but we’ll try to keep you updated.

Women/Trans/Queer Wednesday Sept 10 5-7:30pm
At the Flat, we try to create a less oppressive space.  We wish everyone was comfortable in a bike shop, but it just ain’t true.  If you are female, trans and/or queer and don’t feel comfortable coming into the shop on regular nights, come by for our WT*Q night.
Volunteer Orientation Friday Sept 12 5pm
Interested in helping out at the shop? Wanna learn about working on bikes? Maybe you’d like to meet and hang with some awesome bike nerds?  There are many ways to help, even if you don’t know a thing about bikes! Come volunteer with us!  We’ll be having an orientation this friday to introduce you to the shop and give you an idea of how we work. Please send and email to theflat.bikecollective@gmail.com to RSVP.

We need volunteers!
Speaking of volunteers… Yep, we need your help!  We’ve had to close the shop a few times recently for lack of volunteers. Sadness. Anywhooo… There are many ways to help.  Regular shifting (helping people learn about their bikes during our open hours), Helping with organization and clean up of the shop, coordinating volunteers, making bike learning oriented posters, helping work on our zine, helping pick up donations… All kinds of stuff really!  Send us an email and/or come to our volunteer orientation on the 12th

That’s all for now..  Hope so see you around the shop soon!

p.s.  If anybody out there would be into helping with some translation english to french that’d be super nice.  Send us an email.

We’ll be at rad frosh this saturday and sunday! (aug 30 + 31)

Heyas! Come visit us at rad frosh this year! We’ll be at the scavenger hunt on saturday from 11-1pm, and the diy fair same time on sunday!

About Rad Frosh

taskerade tomorrow 2-4pm

bike tools organized from things organized neatly

Hey flatters/flat friends/flat enthusiasts!

Tomorrow is the third wednesday of May and you know what that means…

TASKERADE!!!

Come on out and help us organize and clean up the shop!  There will be tasty treats, good tunes, and a whole lot of sorting + (re)arranging fun!

If you’re new to the space it’s a great way to get to know the shop and meet and hang out with volunteers. If you’re new to bikes, it’s a great way to get to know the parts that make up a bike and the tools that go into fixing them.  If you’ve been around a while and/or know a lot about bikes its a great way to help people who are newer to these things learn about them.

Hope to see you there!
